01 Threats are really coming!
Shopee and Lazada are declining, while TikTok Shop is rising.
According to the report “The Connected Consumer” released by Decision Lab and the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) of Vietnam in the first quarter of 2023, the Shoppertainment model pursued by TikTok Shop has become an undeniable trend.
“Shopping entertainment is the main growth trend of this quarter. With the rise of TikTok Shop, the boundary between shopping and entertainment is becoming increasingly blurred, and Vietnamese consumers are looking for a more enjoyable and interactive online shopping experience,” said Decision Lab.

The report shows that compared with the fourth quarter of 2022, the usage rate of TikTok Shop continued to grow in the first quarter of 2023, reaching 25% currently. Therefore, since its launch in Vietnam in the first quarter of 2022, the usage rate of the platform has steadily increased by 5% every quarter.
Although Shopee and Lazada have much higher usage rates than TikTok Shop, the two “giants” are declining in this index.
Compared with the fourth quarter of 2022, the usage rates of Shopee and Lazada in the first quarter of this year decreased by 2% and 3%, respectively, to 79% and 59%.
In terms of popularity, the report states that among the top e-commerce platforms, Shopee’s popularity among consumers is continuously declining.
In the first quarter of 2023, 52% of respondents said that Shopee is the online shopping application they use most frequently, a decrease of 3% from the previous quarter.
Specifically for each age group of consumers, from the third quarter of 2022 to the first quarter of 2023, Shopee’s popularity in Gen Y and Gen Z has also continued to decline.
In the previous quarter, 49% of Gen Y respondents and 67% of Gen Z respondents stated that Shopee was their most frequently used platform, which decreased 5% from the previous quarter.
Meanwhile, the popularity of TikTok Shop is on the rise, especially among Gen Z. In Q1 2023, 7% of Gen Z survey respondents stated that TikTok Shop was their most frequently used shopping platform, higher than Tiki and Facebook – both of which are more popular among Gen X and Gen Y.
Based on the above data, Decision Lab and MMA recommend that brands should leverage the Shoppertainment trend more, use platforms such as TikTok Shop, collaborate with influential people and anchors, and create exciting and authentic digital shopping experiences.

Shopee releases notice for Taiwanese sellers to sign authentic guarantee letters
According to Shopee, in order to provide buyers with better services and a secure shopping experience, since Q1 2021, Shopee Taiwan has established counterfeit-related regulations, requiring all cross-border sellers on Shopee to sign an authentic guarantee letter to ensure that all products sold on Shopee are authentic.
