Active buyers increase by nearly one-third! Ozon announces multiple impressive achievements in Q1!

Ozon reports a nearly one-third increase in active buyers and multiple impressive achievements in Q1

AMZ23 learned that Ozon has announced unaudited financial and operating results for the first quarter of 2023. The company’s adjusted EBITDA reached a record of 8 billion rubles and the operating costs per order have been reduced by more than half.

In the first quarter, Ozon’s GMV grew by 71% compared to the same period last year, reaching 303 billion rubles. Seller sales grew even faster – almost doubled (increased by 93%), and the share of third-party sellers on Ozon reached 79.5% (an increase of 9 percentage points). The number of active buyers increased by almost one-third, reaching 37 million users, compared to 28.7 million in the same period last year.

Returning customers helped Ozon increase order frequency by 1.5 times: in the first quarter of 2023, Ozon’s buyers placed an average of 15 orders per year, compared to 10 orders a year ago. The growth in loyal customer numbers is reflected in the total number of orders – the number of orders increased by 93% year-on-year, reaching 179.3 million. In the first quarter of 2023, Ozon’s revenue increased by 47%, mainly due to the market service revenue more than doubling. Service revenue, including revenue from advertising and financial services, once again exceeded Ozon’s own sales revenue, accounting for 57% or 53.4 billion rubles of total revenue.

The company’s revenue from seller advertising platforms has again doubled, exceeding 10 billion rubles. In the first quarter of 2023, adjusted EBITDA continued to grow, reaching a record of 8 billion rubles. This indicator has been positive for the fourth consecutive quarter. The company has improved its profitability by improving unit economic efficiency through measures such as economies of scale and logistics business process optimization. Therefore, the operating costs per order on the market have been reduced by more than half, from 187 rubles in the first quarter of 2022 to 87 rubles in the first quarter of 2023. The same factors have also affected the company’s gross profit, which exceeded 15.5 billion rubles, accounting for 5.1% of the first quarter 2023 revenue.

According to BusinessDialogue, data shows that the net profit for the first quarter of 2023 was 10.7 billion rubles, while it was a loss of 19.1 billion rubles for the same period last year. This is mainly due to one-time income generated by early repayment of financial liabilities, as well as a significant increase in revenue. As of March 31, 2023, the total amount of cash, cash equivalents and short-term deposits was $1.1 billion, which is the same as the fourth quarter of 2022. (1.3 billion US dollars)
